The surroundings
St Marcel is located within the Natural Park of the Narbonne region. Within 25 km around the town of Narbonne this park encompasses the Mediterranean and the inland ponds ("étangs"), the plains covered with vineyards and the hilly hinterland with its plateaus.

Long sandy beaches over tens of kilometers (Narbonne Plage, St Pierre, Gruissan)
are dominated by the "la Clape" mountains (offering hiking, mountainbike and climbing tracks with views to the Mediterranean and the inland ponds).

The town of Narbonne lies about 10 km east of St Marcel
and displays a full range of important relics from the prehistory to the Middle Ages. Important place of wine-growing in the Languedoc region.

The "Canal du Midi" (or waterway of the two seas) between Toulouse and Sète is about 2 km away from St Marcel:
having been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, the waterway nowadays offers pleasure trips on foot, by bike or on horseback on the ancient hauling tracks.
The canal's junction to the Mediterranean, the "Canal de la Robine", continues to Narbonne, passes under the bridge "pont des marchands" and finally reaches Port la Nouvelle having made its way through the inland ponds.

An important heritage of ancient Roman times and the Middle Ages in the surroundings:
close to Ensérune a Gallo-Roman oppidum; close to Sallèles, Amphoralis, an ancient pottery; in Narbonne (on the square of the city hall) relics of the "via romana"
which connected Italy und Spain; numerous historical buildings and museums (Palace of the archbishop, St Just Cathedral, St Pasteur Cathedral).
Taking the route towards the town of Carcassonne you will come upon the abbeys of Fontfroide and Lagrasse before you finally reach the medieval town center of Carcassonne.

The wine-growing regions of Minervois and Corbières the wines of which are competing for best quality.
A visit of the wine-cellars offers interesting excursions providing insights into types of vine, wine production and wine-tasting.
The galleries of "Terra Vinea" tell the story of the wine and the land of the "Corbières Méditerranéennes".

Culinary specialties of the region:
of course the wines from the "Languedoc", olives called "Lucques de Bize" (visit the "Oulibo" premises at Bize-Minervois), rosmary honey from the Corbières (the beekeepers of the "Clauses"),
Oysters from the ponds around Narbonne (go to Leucate), sea salt (from the salt-works of "Ile St Martin"), salt meat from the "Montagne Noire" and last but not least fresh fruits and vegetables.
